A technology-based business district built within the protective framework of an existing warehouse

The BTC, located in an old mattress factory on the west campus of the University, is a business incubator providing economical space and business counseling to start-ups evolved from or with connections to University research. By designing offices, conference rooms, and labs as small buildings within the big building, openness of the space, penetration of natural light from light monitors, and closure where necessary was achieved. The major design challenges included creating a new image and a new entry, creating connectivity and clear circulation between old and new, and bringing outside light into the otherwise dark factory space.
